WHFI, 106.7 FM,has been broadcasting on a continual basis since 1997. The station, located in the Monroe County Technical Center in Lindside, received its FCClicense in 1990 and broadcast until 1992, when construction for the James Monroe High School football field interrupted the station’s signal. The station has a signal of up to 5,000 watts and reaches much of southern West Virginia and parts of Virginia. Renovations started in 1994, under the supervision of engineer Wayne Boone and the station had limited broadcasts beginning in 1995. James Monroe students became actively involved through Marvin Dixon’s journalism class in 1997. The students ran the station throughout the school day, five days a week, using cart machines and a reel-to-reel player. The station upgraded to computer automation in 1998 and began broadcasting 24 hours a day in 2000. Throughout its history, WHFI has broadcast both James Monroe sporting events and events in the community, such as the annual Fourth of July parade in Lindside. The station, run by a mix of student and community volunteers, has an 80’s format during the school hours, but has several specialty programs in the evenings and on weekends. Most recently, the station started producing “Monroe County Today,” a local newscast airing three days a week.
