KAXE has been providing over 30 years of community public radio to its listeners across Northern Minnesota. Shows include KAXE's Morning Show, On the River, World Cafe, Currents, All Things Considered, Jazz with Bob Parlocha and more.

The mission statement of KAXE, which is also available on 89.5 FM in Brainerd and 105.3 in Bemidji, is "Northern Community Radio builds community in northern Minnesota through radio programming, cultural events and interactive media".

Over 100 volunteers and a limited staff are behind what goes on at NCR and KAXE.  The station's company was founded by Richard and Suzi McClear, Dave Molvik and Dale Constantine in December of 1970, but KAXE did not go onto the air until April 23rd, 1976. After the founders of had left the station went through a series of transitions and managers, even facing its tower being brought down by a dump track that got caight on a guy wire in 1985.  KAXE moved into their current office in 2005.
