WGCU TV 31 is a PBS-member TV station in Fort Myers, Florida, owned and operated by Florida Gulf Coast University. The station calls itself "TV3", as it is located on channel 3 on most cable TV systems in the area. WGCU television first signed on in 1983 as WSFP-TV. The station was owned by the University of South Florida in Tampa, owners of public broadcasting stations WUSF FM and TV. At the time, Fort Myers / Naples was the only media market in Florida without any public broadcasting stations. Area cable systems usually piped in WEDU in Tampa or WPBT in Miami, depending on the location.
